Ann E. Smith papers, 1836-1867.

Papers of Ann E. Smith consist principally of letters to Smith from New Orleans, La., cotton factors M.B. Brady and Co. and J.B. Byrne and Co. The letters describe recent sales of Smith's cotton, enumerating the amount sold and profits. Other letters offer a general description of the state of the cotton market and explanations for poor sales and profits. The papers also include several bills of lading for shipments of Smith's cotton by steamer and a group of issues of the New Orleans price-current and commercial intelligencer, a publication providing commercial wholesale prices of various agricultural and other products. Accompanying the business correspondence are two personal letters to "Cousin Lizzie" from Anna "Nannie" Davis Smith and Mary Germany giving news of family members.
